The New Ford for 1928

Luke - Thanks for sharing. I love those old films; especially when it's about history of the Model A.

I noticed that the drivers use the running board when entering the car. For me, it is much easier to skip the runningboard when entering.

I noticed everyone entering the Ford "head-first"... I thought I was the only one that had to do that... :o

If I try to slide-in fanny-first, I can't get knees / feet past the door pillar ! :p

( I still am amazed that John Goodman managed to squeeze himself into an A for "O Brother, Where Art Thou ?" !!! )

I've gotta do the 'step over running board, right leg in, head in, then slide in the rest of the way.

Being over 6ft and 220 with a size 13 boot makes for tight quarters in some Model A body styles.

I got a kick out of watching people (including Edsel) climb so easily into the coupe. I take a little longer climbing into my '30 coupe.

Nope no relation! At least that I know of.

On the subject of Henry Ford & food, his suggestion for curing an ulcer was "swallow a ball of butter down whole and the ulcer will go away."

Oh stop, I squeeze my self in the pickup all the time and I think I'm around his size give or take? :D

When I was 13/14 and lived in Dearborn Township me and my buddies used to ride around the Dahlinger estate on our motor bikes (what a place!). In later years I worked for Dearborn Heights (formerly Dearborn Twp.) in the highway dept. The boss told me to always keep Mrs. Dahlinger driveway clear of snow, by that time she had sold most of the estate but still had 20 Acres or so (originally 150). One day she came out and thanked me for taking care of her driveway (about a 1/4 mile). I think her name was Evangeline and was Henry's secretary. I also met the son about 15 years later after she was in a nursing home and I was on the fire dept. They had a couple fires there in the Gardner's house. They also had a boat house there on the Rouge River, up river from the Fairlane estate which also had a boat house on the Rouge. I heard that Mr. Dahlinger lived in one end of the house and her in the other, with Henry a frequent visitor. :) This was also before the son wrote the book claiming to be Henry's son.

Edit: BTW Mr. Ford was the first dead man I ever seen, my dad took me to Green Field Village to view the body when I was 7 years old.

You betcha ! :p

I just dive-in head-first !

If I put on any more "insulation", I'm going to have to start greasing the driver's side doorway though...

They made that rumor a central part of the made for TV movie about Henry Ford, the one where Cliff Robertson played the part of Mr. Ford. A pretty blonde gal played the part of Ray Dahlinger's wife, can't recall her name off hand. She was a big hit in the late 70's.

At any rate, I don't put a lot of faith in those kind of movies, seems like they have to sneak stuff like that in because that is the only way they can hold the interest of 80% of the viewers especially women.

I hold that movie in high regard. After all where else could I have learned Henry Ford invented the Briggs & Stratton motor?

I agree that movie is highly dramatized, if I had the capital I'd film an accurate Ford movie. The interesting thing is Evangeline Dahlinger was a dark haired girl, not a blonde. But in the 1980s, blondes were all the rage. I need to get a DVD of this film, I still have the VHS set, but no VCR.

Here's a couple videos I uploaded about the introduction of the Model A. They are silent film and the quality is about what you'd expect from an old newsreel, but they are worth a look! Hope y'all enjoy.

I like that "test track" video, too. Who would dare run their "A" like that today?

Doug
