The hamb

I have seen references to stalkers a couple times now. Does that mean stalk on online and pestering? or something else?

There were people who jumped into every post involving their enemies, sometimes under newly created screen names, and insulted and harassed in very nasty ways. Apparently there was some off-board activity too.
Certain boards, not this one, have been nearly destroyed as sources of useful info by having the most productive and knowledgable members harassed...we are all dependent on a small number of serious experts who willingly share their knowledge here...imagine the best of thgem being harassed until they simply go away and spend their time on their own work.

Got it Bruce. Yes that would be a shame.

Bassman/NZ I just looked up the Hambandy threads on the hamb. I went through a bunch of the build threads, all the way to the memorial. Reading it was, well, sad and powerful. That is what "it's" about!

I'm a member of several forums and the HAMB is my favorite. I spend most of my time there and have been a member for five years.

I have been on H.A.M.B. with another screen name. I did introduce myself but promptly got into trouble when I posted a correction to a factual error in the classified section. The guy who posted the thread was wrong about what he was presenting/selling. I corrected him in a gentle manner and provided source info. Well, he jumped all over me and was really angry. Never once did he thank me for providing him (and by extension, the forum members) the correct info. He was more upset that I posted on his classified, which is a no-no on H.A.M.B. He was probably angry that I had corrected him too. Too bad, he was wrong. Live and learn. The guy was a real A-ho. I still don't feel comfortable there.

Tony, I'd say all through life you are going to find A-holes. If you are thinskinned I would probably hesitate to mix it up in the HAMB. You have to remember that these are two different forums with two different themes that both have to do with cars. Go over to the HAMB and read all the stickys that Ryan has put in there. Hot rod hoodlums tend to be a little rougher around the edges.....But no better or worse,,,,Pipes

Thanks Pipes. It was my mistake, what I posted and where, but the guy could have been a little nicer about it. I am a wall flower over there. I enjoy the information and the tales of old time hot rodding. And I do appreciate the "old school" mentality when it comes to hot rods---That is what attracted me to the place to begin with. Believe me, I have since learned the rules and how to behave. Thanks again.

The fact is that people take themselves too seriously, you have to go to the forum with the right mindset. Are you going to go there and blah blah about your street rod or off topic car? You shouldn't. If you have an OT car or street rod should you stay off the HAMB, no. You should just be open minded and not even necessarily overly respectful but aware that at this point in time the car hobby has some divisions, they may eventually fade away. You still have all of the basic same components that all still do the same thing and interact the same way, they may just be constructed differently and be of a different material and finish, so essentially you still have an old car that 90% of all topic on the HAMB applies to, so why not use it as a tool to learn? You just have to not post pics, use certain wording, ask certain questions that will bring attention to the fact that you may not be a 100% er. If you look around a bit most of the other forums really suck, the HAMB and the Barn are nicely formatted and easy to use. As far as getting attacked or ripped on I have never had an issue on the HAMB, I had a few here, but not for a while now. If you go in with a good clean non confrontational attitude you won't get any back lash, same as if you were talking to the guys in person, if you act an ***, are rude and abrupt or are argumentive you would get a few words in person, same on a forum, trade information and have a better easier time with the cars, it's all good.

Tinker... I'm glad you did that. That is what the Hamb is about.... not a*holes who cause trouble. With 100,000 members there's always going to be idiots, but the HambAndy story epitomises the camaraderie and spirit of helpfulness that lies within. I personally have been helped out several times by Hambers, even though I live on the other side of the world, and the knowledge I've gained is immeasurable.

The HAMB is huge and as a result attracts its fair share of idots, people with poor comprehension and spelling skills etc. It also attracts wheeler dealer types who only join to exploit the classified market a huge member base provides, but never post anything of use on the main board.

I should add that in my observation the HAMB is not alone in either aspect.

It's pure percentages.

If 2% of the population online are idiots/a-holes/etc, well, here that is 2% of <8400 people, or about 168. There, it's 2% of >100,000 people or 2,000+ idiots. It's a numbers game. It just seems like there's more of them.

Something that interests me...just from observation and inference, I think most of us here are fairly old, able to remember when flatheads were routinely seen on the road and at the races at least.
On the HAMB, there are plenty of people with some of this sort of depth too, but there are a lot of young people, many in their twenties, building flathead powered cars and eagerly sopping up information from wherever they can get it. I think a lot of the future of the flathead is over there. Many of them never encountered a carburetor a set of points, or a drum brake in their lives until they met the flathead...

Ernie you are too gracious with the 2%. That number is more likely the one for people with certificates dealing with their social stability. I still want to know how Grumpy got a moving avatar.

It's a (animated) gif file. Here's one for you frank. Hope this works.

Bassman, yes I have received great information over there. After joining the barn, I found that a lot of those guys, that were real help, were here more often.

Like them both for different reasons.

I think there will always be a very large crowd on the HAMB. It comes with good & bad just like the rest. My only real concern is that I know I miss more than half of the good stuff on there because I just don't have time to absorbe it all. Time means a whole lot more to folks that may have less of it left than those that haven't noticed that yet.

I do get lucky though and catch some of the really good ones that keep getting brought back up. I have learned to skim past a lot of stuff that doesn't seem to deal with my intrest in a thread. It's the only way I can limit my time on there and get back to the projects that I Need To Get Done.
