testing O.D. relays

Looking for Help here, I have a 55 ford fairlane with an O.D. unit, can someone explain how to test the firewall relay the Overdrive solenoid on the ****** and then unit that is mounted to physically engage the O.D. I have three items in front of me on the bench and i would like to check them independently of each. these are 6 volt pcs. Thanks for any help

The 1955 Ford Car Shop Manual (Green Book) has a whole chapter (Part Four, Chapter II) on the OD Transmission including Troubleshooting and Test Procedures...
