Is there a simple way to test a coil when out of the car? Also, it is hard for me to believe that the distributor needs to be removed to clean and gap the points. Thanks in advance! Don

Actually removing the unit for service is a good thing. If ya have it on the bench you can get it cleaned up a adjusted correctly. :>)

For a good coil test, you need special equipment and a good preheat prior to testing. All you can do without a coil tester is check the primary and secondary coils with a volt/ohm tester then do a function check. A coil tester will tell if it's breaking down under different conditions. An oscilloscope can also be used for a function check. These types of equipment aren't seen much in auto shops any more.

Like the guys say, the divers helmet distributor would be a b!tch to work on in the confines of an engine compartment.

You can do a basic test by hooking up a condenser with the earth to the spring and bat earth . pos to the coil terminal ,HT lead to 1/8 from earth .the pos lead as points on/of
