Testing a coil

I bought a new 12v coil from NAPA, put it in the car flick the points very nice blue spark.
However the car would not start put an old coil back and it ran fine.
Why don't know don't care

Just FYI

What is a "slant pole" coil?

The two leads on the coil are not straight up and down but rather "slanted" out.

From the guidelines;

I tried this test and it is fine with my TSC coil and new points and condenser. I did find that the arm could touch the small length of screw that fastens the fixed point block to the plate. I put a washer under the arm at the pivot, but filing down the tip of the screw would work, too. If that was the problem with the points that were installed when the car stopped, I don't understand why it happened all of a sudden.

I'd say your new coil has extra wire on both the primary and secondary and will work fine.

To check for spark I would stop the engine with the points open, then turn the key on and use a screwdriver to short across the open points contacts while holding the coil wire 1/4" from a head nut. You should get a hot blue spark each time the screwdriver is removed from the contacts. If you get a heavy spark at the points contacts and a weak spark at the coil wire, the first thing I'd suspect is the condenser. If that doesn't fix it then try the coil. So far every coil I bought at a swap meet has been good.

Is that on a 6 volt or 12 volt car?
