Temperature readings with and without a Thermostat

Many people drill some bleed holes in the thermostat housing so that there is a small continuous flow of water even when the thermostat is completely closed. Maybe 3 holes 1/8-inch diameter. This would give you the correct block outlet temperature all of the time, and would somewhat reduce the thermal shock to the block when the thermostat opens.

"If I weren't such a cheapskate I'd donate a head so you could bore a hole in it and install the temperature probe BEFORE the impeller"

Larry, can you suggest a spot in your opinion where it could be placed?

I have 160 deg t/stat and a temp gauge in my "A". It consistently runs about a needle width under 190 deg. Is 190 deg. a good temp to run it at? Is this normal?
Engine was recently overhauled and has 575 miles on it.

Thanks for any input.

when I first got my model b I noticed it didn't have a t/stat. If I ever decide to put a t/stat in where would I put it? Would it be in the hose or in or on the block? Also, where is the best spot to put a temp. sensor. I am also looking for a good place to get parts for the model B, so if you could help me out again that would be great.3 Thanks.

Yes. In the center of the water hump directly across and in between #5 and #7 studs.

With a Brumfield Head it's no problem because there's plenty of meat for threads. You can even mill a small flat spot if you want to.

The stock head can be as thin as 1/8 inch so depending on the probe it might be a little work to set up a fitting that would seal and hold.

Many people install an old traditional type sending unit in the cast water neck but that is not my area of choice.

Ron In Quincy, Interesting note about running without fan belt with your friend's A.Were the impellers on the water pump very worn? I've always assumed that the w/pump would block any thermosyphon effect , and for that reason when on tour in case of water pump failure I have carried a 2 inch piece of ply wood to block off the housing.
