Temperature gauge

I got my newly rebuilt Skips water pumps painted and installed today. Also installed the NOS coil spring T-stats. Fired her up and let her come up to temp. Everything seems to be working great. My temp gauge is old and original to the car...has the red "fluid" in it. When I'm seated behind the wheel, I can't see where the level of the fluid is. I grabbed a flashlight and it was just slightly below half after idling in the driveway for 15-20 minutes. I believe the gauge is working fine but I can't see it when driving. Is there a removable "shield behind the glass vial that I can paint white or silver so I can see the level easier?

There is a mounting plate, removable with (I believe) two screws. I'd take care with that idea, as you don't want to destroy originality. As you reinstall, verify the scribe on the glass is lined up with the 212º mark on the gauge face. ...And about reinstalling, it will be much easier if you haven't bent the capillary tube while removing.

You might also address the transparent plastic windows on the sides of the gauges. They are there to let in light from the dash lite bulb, but have darkened with age.

Sounds good. When you say NOS coil do mean an old original Ford coil?
If that is what you have you can expect the same temperature related
problems as a used old Ford coil. Use wasn't the coil problem, it's the
material that was used 70 years ago. G.M.

. . . installed the NOS coil spring T-stats.

Just curious. Are these the thermostats you installed?
