Tell me is my block trash.

I was doing my tear down on my engine when i pulled the valve cover off, i notice there was a hole in between the middle main cap bolts. I know there is a some oil slung up in the cover. the motor is a 27 and it has a one piece cover. If its not supposed to be there is there any thing i could do or is the block just trash? Please help securedownload.jpg

Thats just a passsage for the NH carb throttle rod up to 1926. 1927 was the year for all vaporizer carb units hence the 1927 only valve cover. They all have that passage. The carb isnt worth a heck of a lot but those valve covers are kinda scarce... 1 year only. ws

Some blocks have the passage blocked, depending on the carb set up and whether it used a linkage rod. Either way, it is just a thin casting designed to be knocked out if you required a linkage to be operated through the hole. Its fine.

thats right i forgot about the carb rod. i have only work on a pre1927 bock and it had the two piece vavle cover with the big window openin. i thought it was a hole in the block because it was'nt a clean hole. that a big relief. thanks to all who posted.

Actually, not all late T blocks had the hole - all late model Vaporizer equipped cars did not. I have popped holes into two blocks for guys wanting to run a NH's.

Sure has the looks of something that was put in with a gas axe. Is it actually a '27 block. I guess from the looks of the hole I don't really need to ask. Have you checked your VIN to see what year it checks out to be?

Had a '27 Tudor I changed to an NH. Had the block hole and a hole in the valve cover but none in the gasket. Just to confuse things more.

How about the two small holes in the gasket... those are drains for oil thats accumulated between the cover and the gasket... ws

And the answer to natebeach90's question is...

Naw go ahead and use it. If whoever cut the hole with the gas axe screwed it up you'll know it.

Nate, not meaning to be disrespectful, but if you had problems with that hole, perhaps it would be a good idea to find a fellow Model T guy in your area to help you look the car over. You could post for someone near you???
A Model T is simple, but it can be complicated at the same time if you have never been around one.
Also as pointed out above, many parts got changed over the last 90?? years. Some of these cars got used for many years before they were parked and an auto scrape yard was often the source or replacement parts.
