Tech: Water Pump Pully Removal Tip

When I changed my water pump last, I had to come up with something that I could hit so that I didn't damage the threads on the water pump shaft.

After looking in the tool box, I noticed that the locking bolt and nut that go through the axle to retain the king pins was the same size and thread as the water pump.

So, apply that big nut to the end of the pump and whack away without worry of messing up your water pump.

good tip, but I don't think you want to be using a carpenters hammer for this. They are hard faced and could chip. A ball pein machinists hammer is what is recommended in such a situation.

I never thought of trying one of those.Does it bottom out on the end of the shaft,so the impact goes on the end of the shaft, or do you thread it on partway so the impact goes through the threads?

If the kingpin retaining nut doesn't bottom out, a couple of small nuts could be inserted in to the nut before screwing it onto the waterpump. I suppose you could also cut off the kingpin retaining nut and dress it flat on a grinding wheel so it bottoms out, but that is a little more work.
