Tappet noise

My B motor has new set of valves and adjustable lifters and a cam grind.

I have not run it long since the rebuild but I am a little surprised as to how loud they are.The cam grinder stipulated .010 for both in/ex so thats what they are.
Should the tappets be that audible ?

Depends on the grind. Some cams have an area that closes up the gap before opening the valves. This reduces the tappet noise.

After running the engine for a while, go back and check the gap.

Good advice from Neil. For what it's worth, I prefer a little more tappet noise than a little less. It's comforting to know those valves are sitting tightly on those seats.

Is the noise from Lash, -or is it from excessive Bore clearance? Like more than half of the engines we see have too much Tappet Bore clearances.

.010 is a little tight for an exhaust valve. At .010 I would not expect any tappet noise.what tappets did you use. The cam grind should have a ramp on the grind between the base circle and leading edge of the lift. The foot of the tappet should be convex. Many possibilities here.

Thanks for the input.I cant say I remember what the cam lobe profile was like but it was reground by a very experienced machine shop familiar with Model A and classic vehicles so will have to believe the problem is not there.

I will have to post video of the motor running and you can decide if its all in my head .
Here is some before and after photos of the progress.

Two quick comments! That looks like an early B engine without counterweights on the crank. Good to see it is RHD.
Now drive the wheels off it.

No ,I'm pretty sure the crank has counter weights .Revs out easy and no vibration .Apart front the large chunks of metal attached to the crank :D

Still have one LOUD tappet.I think I may have one adjustable lifter that is not tightening down. Will have to take off the side cover once again.Would be nice to finally get past that task.
