i'm looking for the mercury emblem that goes on the tailgate of my 55 wagon does anyone know if the sedan trunk emblem is the same

Probably not. The FORD bezel that goes on the wagon tailgate is different than the emblem that goes on a sedan trunk lid. They look the same but physically wont fit properly due to the contour difference between thetailgate and trunk. You can still buy the tailgate bezel and plastic insert new from Concours parts for the FORD tailgate but they dont repro the parts for the Merc as far as I can tell.

There used to be a 55 or 56 Merc wagon sitting down at Huxels Auto salvage, 4017 Highway A, Union, MO 63084 http://www.yellowpages.com/union-mo/mip/huxels-auto-salvage-11073790/map?lid=11073790 (636) 583-5906. I would bet it is still there.
If I remember right, the owners name is Bill Huxel. He was always very helpful to me. You might call and ask if the tailgate emblem is still on it. The way I remeber it, the wagon appeared to be a complete car.
