tail pipe clamp

Is the exhaust tail pipe to be left loose in the clamp to the frame so there is a little flex? Problem is when a little loose it rattles.

original clamps and bolts and those made to original specs should be tightened until the short, top bend tab contacts the bottom, and then cottered. The pipe will slide within the clamp with some resistance, but not rattle. Many repro clamps and bolts are too small. Some clamps are for the Midas and other repro mufflers with the smaller tailpipe and are too small for a muffler made to Ford design. Many bolts have the cotter bores too far up the bolt so the bolt is tightened too tight. It all depends on what you are using. The tail pipe should not be clamped so tight it cannot move at all, nor so loose it rattles.

I have the same problem.

My muffler was the cheapie bought 6 or 7 years ago...cost was $50 or so then?
What clamp will work with is muffler? The pipe got crushed in a little when they did the axle bend. This causes my clamp to have slop thus rattle.

Will the exact repro version of the clamp work with this muffler?

Thanks for any help.

the exact repro will be too large, as the cheap muffler has a smaller tailpipe. There are many undersized clamps out there at swaps. You can also get some of that high heat insulating tape used to wrap exhaust pipes, and cut a liner for the larger clamp you have to act as a shim.
