tail gate chains

What can I do to stop the hooks from taking the paint off the brackets?
I tried to use the rubber tool coating and can't come up with the right red color.
Thanks Dwight

Been driving my '28 roadster pickup for 45 years and the chains have created a neat swing scratch pattern on the bed. It's a beater and the scratches attest to the many miles of enjoyment and use. Maybe a small bungee down to the tailgate hinges,or the chain covers sold by some vendors.

I use chain covers, but have the standard hook. It's a pickup, for crying out loud!

I suppose you could use the tool coating on the hook itself in conjunction with the chain covers. Just use black. It would look like it belongs. Especially if you use black chain covers.

Here is an idea I have but have not tried on my Pickup.
Put some shrink Tubing on the hooks. It's very thin and should last if you are careful when using the hooks.
Powder coating should work but more difficult to get chains done correctly.

maybe paint bracket with black paint(brush it on) redo as needed. elect shrink tubing sounds like a good idea. tom

I have always used bicycle inner tube for the chains, but I like the idea of the electrical shrink tubing for the hooks - good one. If you use a chain cover, don't forget the hole in the bottom to let the water out.

I put thin strips of rubber between the box and gate. It makes for a really tight gate and an interference fit on the hooks. My gate doesn't move, couldn't stand the rattle.
