Tail & Brakelight wires

Hi to all - This is my first post in the Model A Forum. I spent 4 years in the Model T Forum rebuilding my "26 Roadster. I traded up for a '30 Briggs Fordor in reasonable shape (I think!) but the light wiring seems to be screwed up. I spent an hour and a half looking for the brake light switch only to find I don't have one. While I ordered one I can't seem to see where it will fit in the crossmember. Also I took the tail light off to check why it wasn't working and found three wires. Taking off the switch I checked continuity to three wires. One was tail light, one was brake light (after I wired together two wires wher the Brake switch should be) and one is a mystery wire. I am wonder ing if I coud get some advice as to what it might be before I strip off the loom to chase it. No continuity from any point on the light switch. Any help would be appreciated!

It might be a separate ground or it could be an independent wire to the brake light for a turn signal.

It sure appears someone at one time made a harness. So, when you took the light off, what were those wires hooked to ? If there is no turn switch then I would think that wire [?] could well be a ground, thats why I'd like to know what it was hooked to. You could check continuity from it to ground and see what you have. Before cutting up a loom, can you find the same color wire poking out of the loom somewhere ?

Here is a picture Tom W posted of the stop light switch
mounted to the cross member.

I tried it to ground but there wasn't any continuity. I'll have to spend some time unde the car looking for a stray wire. It wasn't hooked up to the tail light but just loose inside it. Thanks for the help.
