T86 with R10 questions

Fellas, I completely disassembled a T86 with R10 today. The gears and teeth are all in excellent shape. I had to disassemble to replace the main case of the T86 since UPS broke off a mounting ear and lost it.

It did not have that many miles on it ... but take a look at how I had to booger up the old rear seal on the tailshaft to get it out .

Eventually went to an air chisel. I guess they made the seals a whole lot better back in the day. The thing was stout.

QUESTION: What is the best way to clean the tailshaft housing? I "might" be able to get it into my parts washer next week but the thing is huge and narrow at the bottom end. What is the best way to clean it?

anyone out there ever resto one of these units? maybe you have some advice before I tackle reassembly?

scrape the worst of the grease and dirt off, spray the case generously with Castrol super clean, and wash off with garden hose, or high press hose at car wash. I usually do this on a piece of plywood to "catch" the crud that comes off. usually works well for me. you may have to use a brush to "scrub" it a little, depending on how clean you want it

forgot to say to rinse off with hot water and blow dry with compressed air immediately to prevent any "flash" rusting. ----Jim

Dosen`t matter if you destroyed the old seal, $20. and you have a new one. There are many manuals that tell you step by step how to proceed to overhaul....I like the Ford manual the best...hopefully you took pictures when dismantelling it ...if not then get yourself an illustration manual or a CD showing the actual schematic of an overdrive ****** and you will see how it goes together...you might think about not only replacing all seals but also the synchronizers and as well....check roller bearing for cracks and also check the "balk ring tension" The manuals should tell you how to test the balk ring tension....for parts you can try "vanpeltsales.com " or "northwest ****** parts" at 1-800-327-1955 and others
I believe you can buy a complete overhaul kit for it.
If you decide to have a ****** shop do the work make sure they are qualified to work on these old overdrives..they usually charge $600 for labor plus any parts....have fun.

What is this "paint" in the tailshaft housing? I have never seen this before in a 50s transmission, and it certainly was not in the main case.

also, does anyone know why the tailshaft has a smooth sheet metal guard around the seal area? All other R10's I have seen have the two ribs cast into the rear of the tailshaft.

The transmission with the cover on the tail is a Merc. I have attached a pic showing a '54 Ford ****** on the bottom and a '54 Merc ****** on the top. They are interchangeable but the '54 Merc ****** has some minor internal differences.
