t5 is installed

:mad:The t5 is in the roadster. Machine work on pilot shaft turned out OK. I did not have time to mess with shiping. I bought a flathead pilot bearing and machened the chevy bearing to fit the larger I.D. ford bearing. Torned out to be a 26 spline t5. Finding the proper clutch was a half day hunt. ABC auto had one in stock. The fellow at ABC is a old hot rod man. He went out of his way to help. Transmission shop allowed me to use there lathe. Instalation went smooth. Sliped right in. Used the ford throwout bearing shimed it to fit the chevy transmission. Now for a driveshaft and hydraulic brakes. Theframe will be ready for the High Boy Roadster body. Happy here in East, Texas..Lyle

T-5's are great behind a Flathead. Although 1st gear is a stump puller.

. I do have pics Bill I am at work now .I wish I would have taken more of them step by step.I was in a hurry. Not mutch time off .The wife would kill me if I got grease on (her) my cam. I do have installed pics.I did use a ford bellhousing. 49 I think.with the round bar through shaft and forks. A spacer plate. Off of a t5 to late model v8 ford had to machine top bolt holes and tap for bolts. This t5 was in a foriegn made truck like a S10 spacing and lineup was ok. I just had to modify the bolt pattern.Tran. is not chevy S10 bolt pattern. So far so good. Lile

37 fatfinder , The. T5 I have is 4.o something and the rearend is out of a bronco. First at a idle I midht be able to walk beside it. Or pull stumps. I do have a closed shaft old 40 something rear end out of a car. I will need to convert it to a open shaft. Hard to find a narrow enough rearend to look right on a A model high boy. Lyle.

Lyle,
First gear in these were 4.03 (most popular), 3.76 and 3.50. The latter are hard to find and probably not worth the trouble of finding. I had the 4.03 in my car and found a 3.76 and put it in.....hardly know the difference. The rear end gear though is where it is important to have the right gear. Remember GM put a 3.73 gear ratio behind all these trannys. I don't think you'll be happy with any thing smaller than that. I have a Ford 8 inch rear with a 3.80 gear ratio. After running a 3.25 ratio, I finally concluded why GM used a 3.73. You'll love the performance of a higher ratio. And 70 percent overdrive reduces your rear ratio to about 2.60 gear in 5th gear. (70% X 3.73=2.60).

Hi 37 FF,I'm putting a T5 that has the .071 fifth gear in my 36 coupe running a 3/4 race flathead.I have a 57 wagon 9".What do you think of a 3.90 which gives me 2.76 final drive or 4.11 that gives me 2.91 final drive? Rear tires are 29".

DL,
My car is very light, with an aluminum flywheel and 31 inch tires. but, with a heavier car like a 36 coupe you might like the 4:11......but the 3.90 is real close. Either one will be a great combination. And to tell you the truth I rarely use 5th gear, but I don't live next to all the SoCal freeways. You might want to determine what RPM your engine will be turning in any given gear to really determine the rear gear.

37fatfinder I checked out the bronco rear end after I first got it home.I remember it was low and it is a positave track .I hope it is not to low of a ratio. Might take off in second I did use the light small clutch Man I will be happy when the test drive time is here.

Deuce lover I think it is a 4.11 Got me thinking when I get home this evening I am going to check it out. Going to reinstall th starter. Check the transmission for fluid. Time for bed after that. 4.30 comes early got to work the old lady likes the money. Lyle

The S-10 doesn't have very good gear ratios for a flathead, First is too low and fift is too high. The Ford T-5 fits allot better. Someone will come up with them, I hope.

Hello OL" Ron Good to see you. I have looked on the net and found the tag number on thr transmission . The number is 1352-216 GM 1993 MY 2.2LS- truck WC.Might be a S15 they made so manny of these things the internet gives conflicting imformation. OK the lower bolt pattern lines up perfict with the flathead bellhousing these I ran the bolts through the transmission case, through the adapter plate into the bellhousing. The top bolts on the transmission are wider than the flathead upper two bolts this Has recessed bolts that bolt the adapter plate to the flathead bell housing. then I drilled and taped the bolts to the transmission to the adapter plate. Every thing centered up OK. the transmission shaft measured about 1.120 I had my head on a pillow since I measured it.And it had 26 splines. I had hoped to start it up and test it this evening, however I had out of town company. I would really like to know what the 1th gear is I will look in the morning. On the net again. Lyle

HOO! Boy! This thing has the late model speedometer elect. hookup. Just thought of that now where can I find out how to adapt to the speedo. for corect MPH.

Lyle:
I come up with a 4.03 1st gear after all it's a truck ******. I think the old 3 speeds had a 2.95 to 1 ratio. A little on the granny side but with the quicker shifting t5 should be sweet anyway.
On the good side it looks like a .76 overdrive that works out better than a .70 like some have. At least you can use overdrive if you want without down shifting all the time. Should be fun to drive with that.

I hear there is a converter from elect. to cable for $300. Most seem to swap tail housing to a pre 89 s10 cable style. Lot of bs there too.

Here's what I find for 1352-216

TAG # VEHICLE APPLICATION CODE REV -1st --2nd-- -3rd---4th --5th
GM 1993 MY 2.2L S-Truck WC P ---3.76- 4.03 -2.37- 1.49 -1.000- .76

I see a WC after truck in the code, that should be a world class ******. They shift better due to better syncros I hear.

You can see 1st is 4.03 and 2nd is 2.37. If standard 3 speeds were 2.95 in 1st you may be damaging the clutch starting in 2nd in the t5. Unless you don't come to complete stop, it's a very light car or it's down hill. Many hills in Tyler ? Gene

I think 92 was the last year s10 used the chevy bolt pattern. What you have is a 93 s10 that's when they switched to ford bolt pattern. Ford in a Ford that's good too. Gene

im running the t5 in mine, had the trannys 5th swapped, it was traded from another t5, dont know what it was, as mine is a '92, swapped the tail to mechanical speedo.
anyway the fifth gear that was pulled just acted like i pulled out of 4th and when i shifted to 5th it felt like i had put it back in 4th.
its fine now, running a '39 banjo with 3.54 gears, tires are 27' have to look for my rpm sheet i wrote up but i remember it always dropping down to 1800rpm in 5th.
and yes it will pull just fine starting out in 2nd gear.
and i really like your trany strap better than the way mine was fabbed.

I'm running a 93 S-10 T-5 with a 88 tailshaft & 3.31 rear gears from a 51 automatic behind my .060 over 8ba with merc crank, isky 77B cam, Offy heads & 4bble intake, Cater WCFB & MSD ready to run dizzy. It tachs 2200 at 65 mph. I just drove it to the James Dean & back & averaged 22.6 mpg over 378 miles. And 129 of those miles were cruiseing the Dean & Ducktail.

Yes, the Borg Warner T5 numbers 202 or 225 are ideal for the flathead.
2.95 first and .8 overdrive..With a 4.10 rear end the OD ratio is about 3.30.
The easiest way to get all the trick stuff in one of these is have a transmission shop build one from parts. You get the ideal ratios and
synchros and you can have either mechanical or electronic speedo drive or both at the same time.....All the parts can be put in either a Ford or Chev case.
With a short throw shift adaptor, these transmissions are hard to beat for a 300 ft lb transmission.

butchbov I have a Mercury 53 automatic rearend. I also have the mercury 8CM I was saving it for another project . Not the rearend maby that is the rearend I should use. I am not stuck on the Bronco rearend. I also have control of the torch and welding mechine. What do you think? also the mercury with 8BA heads for a little compression hike.
