Synthetic oil

Personally, I do not like to use Synthetic in my Model A's.

It will find the least little place to leak and it is hard to find in the heaver weights I like to use and it costs more and I do not feel it offers any better protection for a Model A engine.

I use 10-40 petroleum based for general around town driving but prefer 20-50 for the Model A I use for long distance touring.

Again, this is just my opinion. I know there will be a LOT of other opinions.

There was an article on the Internet last week praising the advantages of synthetic oil for cars. I also read that they are recommended for Model A engines that have some time on them.

On the other side, look at how many A engines run well with straight or multi grade pet based oils..

But, who cares?

If your A leaks one drop of oil per mile it will jump to ten drops per mile with synthetic. Simply because synthetic lubes better.

I use synthetics in both my As.

Joe Valentine gave a seminar on oils at the MARC meet in Gettysburg, part of which was describing the benefits of synthetic oils. I was already a believer, so no convincing needed. My two cars don't really leak that much, so I really haven't seen an increase, but it's not like I am counting drops, either.

I have been running synthetic oil in my Model A's since Mobil 1 came to the market. The engines in my A's see a lot of cruising equal to or above 60 mph, and not once have these engines failed due to oil performance.

To the contrary, regular compression tests show consistently high values (within 5 psig than theoretical) indicating less wear.

Synthetic oils are available in the same viscosities as non-synthetics, so the propensity to leak of synthetic oils is FALSE. I use 10W30 synthetic year-round, and I change it once annually.

My first job out of college was with Sunoco Corporate which is one of the worlds largest refiner of oils. For those that do not use an oil filter and change their oil 500 mile interval it makes not difference so no reason to spend more. 10-40 or 20-50 is great for our A's . Drop to 10-30W if driving in cold climate without a thermostat in winter. All the oils sold today are far far far superior to anything that was available in the Model A days. Personally I have an oil filter and tour so I use a synthetic blend and will go 1000 miles plus. I run a thermostat and tour in very hilly areas. Less oil break down from heat and with the filter the oil will go at least double the specified oil change intervals. I run a 15-40 wt in the summer and winter with the thermostat. Cars that are org. with no filter will run cooler especially in fall and winter and moisture will contaminate the oil since it does not let it evaporate. Short trips are hard on all engines no matter what oil used. This subject has been covered at great length in the past. Best answer use what you makes you happy. :)
