Switching to juice brake question

Also check on 49 to 56 Ford half ton front brakes. I have them on my 40 and they work well. Check on the barn for information.

After all the discussion with him I am convinced I will not go with discs and go with the Lincoln drum Bendix style front & rear. I'll be buying the master cyl., conversion bracket & e-brake bracket parts from Rich. The rest of the parts i.e., Bendix kits, hubs, drums and other required parts from Speedway and MT products to keep pricing down a bit.
Thx to all for all the good advise.

I think you will be very pleased with the drum brakes!

You WILL be happy with the MT products. I used them on my coupe and am in the process of fitting them to my '35 pickup. Good stuff!

Front discs are wonderful. The Lincoln brakes are very good as well. I have disc on front and lincoln on back for 36 and 41. The Lockheed brakes can be made to work but are way more work than the others. IMHO the F100 brakes from the 50s are better than the lincoln brakes in that they are self adjusting. Rich B a barner restores and sells them and cheaper than lincoln as well. I sold him a set to recondition that was on a 40 Ford. I am not the author of the he stuff posted on my website about F1/F100, I found it here on the barn and liked it enough to save it so I could refer to it in the future. I also concur to stay away from silicone fluid. https://fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=238396&highlight=brakes https://fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=237937&highlight=brakes

I use a single Mustang Master cylinder on my 32 Tudor. The front brakes are Lincoln type from Richard @ Early V8. The rears are Ford 9" axle brakes that are self adjusting.
If I ever get the energy I will make the Lincolns self adjusting, as well.
I use Dot 5 fluid with no leaks.

mrtexas I like the idea of cheaper better with the ‘50’s F100 backing plate kit. Will they work on my ‘35? Where to get & all parts required. Hubs drums bearings etc. does Rich B put a complete kit together or do I have to accumulate mix & match on my own?

I'm a big fan of the F1 and F100 conversions. Believe Speedway sells the bearings, etc. Fairly sure you need to come up with the Spindles, Backing Plates, Drums, etc on your own. If someone on the Barn sells the parts as a kit, that would be an easier way to go! All of the guts (wheel cylinders, brake shoes, hardware, etc) is available anywhere and are the same parts used on a number of different cars over many years. I can provide you all of the part numbers if you need them. The Backing Plates, Hubs and Spindles are going to be the hardest parts to find I would guess. Drums should be easy.

I far as I know you need 37 or later Spindles. Here is some background info if you are interested.

F-1/F-100 brakes won't readily work with your original '35 wires (unless you like thick spacers).

They can be installed on 35-36 spindles using the centering ring out of the common kit used to fit Lockheed brakes to the earlier spindles and dealing with the mount holes by
which ever method you prefer.

Thx J, it looks like Rich B a Barner can supply rebuilt backing plates with wheel cyl's & all parts related to just the face plates. '37plus spindles easy. the PDF file is very helpful for the rest.

Don't forget the hubs!

Are the hubs F100 specific or the same as used/supplied via M/T & others for the Lincoln bendix setup? Will I lose the 5 on 5 1/2" wheel pattern?

I don't know the answer to that. F1 and F100 backing plates are the same, but the Hubs are different and the Hubs and Drums must match up. An aftermarket hub would have to mate with a Drum that matched up with the Backing Plates. But, to me if you are using aftermarket Hubs and the matching Drums just as well go with the Backing Plates that match as well. They would be the cheaper part of all of it.

The F1/F100 is 5 x 5 1/2, I don't know anything about the MT setup, but would think they would also come 5 X 5 1/2 as it is a commonly used wheel size.

You need to pay attention to the minor (yet IMPORTANT) differences between F1 and F100 hubs. The difference moves the drum inboard OR outboard in relation to the brake shoes/backing plate. Click on and study the link below. It's easy to get in over your head on some of the details with these kinds of swaps. Pay attention to the folks that have details on a complete, functioning system, and above all, DON'T go with some parts just because you've heard the name a few times. See the pic below for some F1/F100 differences.

One more thing.....Just because you have a 5-1/2" bolt pattern does not NECESSARILY mean that your '35 wire wheels are good to bolt-on! DD

From Rich B. FB member and re-builder on these
Set of F-1 Ford Bendix brakes. Backing plates have been reconditioned, sandblasted, and primed. The brakes are assembled with new riveted shoes, wheel cylinders, and springs. The hubs, adjusters, and grease baffles have been cleaned, blasted, and primed. A set of used F-1 bearings (good for mock-up) and eight original square head mounting bolts and nuts are included. Easy to adapt to early Ford spindles, will include mounting information. Late model replacement drums (Bronco) are readily available from your local auto parts store. The bolt pattern is stock Ford 5 on 5-1/2".

Thx DD, see "" above from Rich B. the Barner guy I'm getting quotes from.
I did know about the the '35 wire rims needing the spacers not to deform the rim with other than the '35 drum / hub ( any other issues you where thinking? ). I believe the combination I need is '37 plus yr spindles, F100 hubs the 5 0n 5 1/2" wheel pattern for drums seems to be used on F1's and F100's? I'll check on the diameter of the front of hub to make sure the nut flange doedn't interfear with the hole to accommodate in the rims.
