Hi Guys, First of all I would like to say thanks to all of the Model A members/enthusiast on this site for helping out, and providing priceless information to other Model A members. Great job! I learned alot reading in General Dessions.

I have attached a photo of a switch located under the dash (left side).
Is this a dealer installed switch for cowl lights?
I have a 31 Coupe.
Thanks Calahan

Dealer installed cowl lights most likely would have used the normal switch. I have seen a number of similar installations used for electric wipers. My Coupe had such an installation which I removed when I restored the car. Gar Williams

What are you calling "the normal switch"?

CarlG, 31Tudor answered the question.

I suspect that the dealer would have installed the cowl lights, switched the headlight reflectors to single bulb, and installed a new headlight wiring harness which would have the connection to complete the circuit from the cowl light wire harness to the headlight harness. The switch at the steering wheel would then turn the cowl lights on when moved to the left. Gar Williams

OK, Not to hijack the thread, but I just purchased a set of NOS fog lights. I already have cowl lights and 2-filament halogen headlights. Cowl ligthts are also dual filament and also serve as turn signals on the front. Not sure what position the fog lights would be plugged into on the horn/light switch. I had thought about just putting an auxillary switch in like the one above, but I don't want to drill a hole in my dash to do it.

Not to hijack the hijacking, but where can you get dual-filament cowl lights?
And how does one manage to squeeze two wires and bullet connectors through the hole in the special bolt that holds the cowl light to the body?

Doug

I bought mine from either Snyders or Sacramento, cant remember which. You put the bullet connectors on AFTER feeding the wires thru the holes in the bolt.

CarlG. I'm not sure if fog lights were offered for the A back when car was new, but believe they were probably offered later in the 30's either as aftermarket or by ford dealer. I have a set of ford logo ones on my A as signal lights (probably from the 40's. Sooo, if you wanted to utilize the original light switch you would have to tie them into either the cowl light or low headlight wires. Personally I don't think with your configuration either way would work. I would drill a hole in BOTTOM of dash rail and mount aux sw on an L brkt. If you remove them later, the hole won't be that obvious, OR mount on a small L brkt to one of the upper screws on the kick panels. JMO

They are made by Unity in Chicago. The last pair I bought at Hershey in '09 from a supplier in Iowa. I do not remember the exact price but it was probably around $200. I have his card somewhere. Send me a PM and I will look for it.

These aren't Ford but $15.00 at a flea market.......works for me

Hey there Calahan, I have the same switch, not similar or kinda like. That switch is on my A too. And it's been rigged by the P.O. to turn on my headlights. My A has the holes for cowl lights and i'm convinced that switch turns on the cowls.

Clydes 31 P/U: Yours are similar to mine, but mine are mounted to the back of the bumper clamp. Paid $20 at rheinbeck this past spring, with patina and ford logo.

Fog lights are an item from the later '30s. Earlier bumper bracket mounted lights were called road or highway lights. Yellow lens fog lights first came out in 1936. The Unity lights being sold these days are continuations of models that came out after WWII. The first seal beam fog lights came out
in 1940 and were called "glasseal" types. The S-4 model Unity was of this type and when the bulbs were clear they were called driving - passing lights. Raised lettering on the bottom of the bulbs stated "Driving" or "Passing". The S-4 Unity light shell is also a fatter or more teardrop style.
As fog/driving lights advanced in design through the years they became slimmer or a flatter style. For years I have been studying and collecting
road/fog/driving/passing/highway lights and lamps.;)
