Swirl glass gearshift knobs

Hello, EBay has used ones , prices start at around $40. and up , some even glow in the dark!

I see lots on eBay. But none the color I am looking for. That is why I am trying to find who actually makes them. None of the Parts Suppliers for Old Fords have them on their websites.

What exactly are you looking for, you’ve shot down the recommendations so far.

What color? Flat or round? Willing ro accept an adapter to fit an early ford lever?

Does anybody know who is making the Swirl glass gearshift knobs?

Mosser Glass in Cambridge, Ohio custom makes them for one of their wholesale partners.

Here's a photo I took of some of their glass products that they make for some of their wholesale partners. You can see a couple of their gearshift knobs in the lower center of this photo (along with some headlight lenses, rear license plate light lenses, etc):

They can custom make them any color that you want.

I live 15 miles from Mosser and had no idea they make those knobs. I'm going to have to inquire myself!

Update on Mosser Glass gearshift knobs. I inquired since we are a dealer. One person said they would have someone contact me. No one did. I had an employee pick up one of our orders and she inquired at the plant. The lady had no idea about any knobs. I emailed again and the second time they said they thought somebody had bought the molds but someone would contact me. Never got any reply, so I assume they no longer make them or never made them in the first place.

Hummm, sounds like you did not talk to the right person. The photo I showed above is one that I took of their display case at the factory showing some of the custom pieces that they have made in the past for customers.

The individual glass moulds are usually proprietary and thus the rights to use them are also proprietary. Mosser has a secure glass mould storage room where customers' glass moulds are kept (if stored on site). If you take their factory tour, you can ask to go see that mould storage room....it is quite interesting.

So the glass mould for those swirl shift knobs are most likely proprietary and thus why they pleaded innocence when you asked about them. Only certain people are allowed un-escorted in the mould storage area and they will of course not tell you who owns the moulds (unless you guess correctly). So to get permission to use that proprietary shifter ball mould you would need to get written approval from the mould owner.

.....or, you could have your own mould made and that way you could produce all of the glass shifter knobs that you would like. Most of the glass moulds that Mosser uses are fabricated by Island Mould & Machine Company in West Virginia.

If you search for "slag glass knob" they do come up on eBay occasionally. Looks like the market price is $40-80.

Hey,

I've turned many gear knobs from different, fine woods. It's easy and looks great.

I've also made them from liquid epoxy resin in a mold made of dental putty, with colored streaks in it. That's more difficult, and the color gradient isn't entirely predictable. But it's also a fantastic view through the resin!

I (Snyder's) own the molds for making the round and mushroom shaped shifter knob and yes, Mosser is who made them for me. There is a 2 piece aluminum insert that has to be glued into the knob after Mosser made the glass portion which we had made as well. Mosser manufactured them for us for well over 25 years with no problems. However for some reason, I couldn't get Mosser to make them. They were sitting on several purchase orders that were over 3 years old with no hope of getting them filled. I decided to discontinue them and have the molds sitting in my warehouse. I am willing to sell my molds if someone feels they have a glass shop that can manufacture them.

That answers that Don, Thanks.. Mosser was pretty evasive on the question so maybe they had issues with them. I know of no one else unless there is a private individual out there who would want to take on the job.

Kind of off topic, but is there a good way to search on eBay now without getting results that are 95% (or higher) totally unrelated? Searching in titles only seems to no longer do just that, and seller after seller put hundreds (or thousands) of totally unrelated words in their descriptions that end up getting used in a search. Very frustrating. Any methods around all this would be greatly appreciated.
