Suspension & Speedo issue

I'm new to the site. I have a 1936 Cabriolet. It has a Columbia two speed that works perfectly, but when I am normal mode, the speedo doesn't show MPH but when I engage the lower gear, it does. Any idea's? Also I am looking for a kit for the front and rear suspension upgrade that is plug and play. Just shocks and sway bars, not really wanting to drop it, just looking for better handling. I have been on Pete & Jakes site looks like they have something but I wanted to check here for some input. Thanks in advance!

Hi Terry,

There is a small Stewart Warner speed changer an overdrive for the speedometer It is a simple device which you may need to disassemble and add new grease to it. Thread below is what I did with mine.

I expect that you have a problem with the rods actuating it. Please post pictures of it with the Columbia in OD and another in normal.

Regarding "plug and play", I suggest you check the function of your existing shocks. They are adjustable and quite good. Also check the condition of your spring, rod ends and steering box adjustment.

the spring center bolt should have a lubrication fitting that looks like a grease fitting but it’s not for grease it’s for spring lubricant as grease will clog the internal passages.
the modern version of spring lubricant would be 75% auto transmission oil and 25% talc ( originally ice machine oil ,talc and a dash of ground asbestos ( look in service bulletins)
used in a dedicated grease gun and shake before using

The Columbia speedo changer, thin metal shift arm should have some spring to it when in low or high, this will ensure the speedo changer stays where it is supposed to be. It may be just an adjustment of the rod from the handle to the speedo changer.
There is no normal mode, just high and low.

Thank you so much for all of the information. I wasn't aware of these responses. Is there a way to receive an email when someone responds?

Yes you can. It is under "Quick Links", "Edit Options" as highlighted below. You already added your email address when you registered so no further action for it.
