Sump changes mystery

Apart from the large plate on early sumps was there any changes in the sump ie hight in the baffle , dipper plate below the top edge??? or in design, :p;) Have counter weighted orig crank & suspect its running real close to the tray & wounder was there two or more differant dipper trays,
Derek from its finally raining her but not much, much cooler today

In the July-August 1931 Service Bulletin it is listed that the "oil pan tray has also been lowered 1/8". This has been accomplished by correspondingly raising the height of the bead in the oil pan tray." This was done in conjunction with the new shield for the oil pump. It later goes on to say that "Under no circumstances install an oil shield without installing the new oil pan or vice versa."

I have a late 31 engine, who knows what pan. Have been thinking about installing the pump shield but have seen that service bulletin and am a bit cautious about installing it because of the warning, and would also like the deeper oil resovoir because like Derek I have counterbalanced crank and would like the clearance and extra oil. Does anyone have any measurements or other things that would indicate what is the deep tray? Also, oil pressure drops on right turns, (with oil nearly full, 4.5 quarts, and even when overfilled) thought I read or heard something about a baffle around the oil pump or something, but cant find anything now. Anyone have any ideas or other solution to that? Thanks

Oil Pressure doesn't mean a thing in a Model A engine. The only thing to be concerned about is the volume of oil flowing, and a pressure gage will indicate that there is oil flowing if there's any pressure at all.

I agree that the issue is volume and that is what I worry about. When pressure drops to zero on a right turn and returns to indicate pressure a bit after straightening out, that indicates to me a lack of pressure and therefore no volume during the turn. I dont care about pressure per se, only as an indication that oil is flowing and to me no pressure means no volume is flowing.

Don't worry about pressure loss on a hard turn, the stock B does the same thing. On the A engine there is oil in the valve galley and in the dipper tray, so the loss does not affect oiling of mains or rods. As soon as you straighten up, there is again oil to the pump.
