So before getting myself in trouble by adjusting something wrong can someone tell me why my 55 crown with standard steering seems to have to much play...With car sitting wheels straight ahead seems like 1 and half inches free play in wheel before it starts to tighten up but when driving it seems i have to turn the wheel about 3 inches before it goes anywhere. Can this be adjusted out with the screw on top of box??My mechanic tells me everything tight underneath..

Yes, it can possibly be adjusted out if the box is not worn out.

If your mechanic tells you that everything is 'tight underneath' and you have all of that movement in the steering wheel, you need to find a qualified/certified mechanic.

Steering, suspension and brakes is no place for DIY. You can get someone injured, killed and/or lose the car. That is the reason for 'being that hard'.

Are you planning on doing the work yourself or have a QUALIFIED SHOP do the work?

Again, is the car manual or power steering?

OK ...

Have you checked the lubricant level? Box bolted tightly against the frame?

Remove the drag link connection. Turn box with the pitman (why do they call it pitman?) sector shaft arm. Does it rotate freely? Move sector shaft side to side, any play?

Check for wear in the bearings & oil seals.

GOOD ADVICE!

The URL below will give you a brief description of how to go about it -

Why make it so hard??

The information you're asking for is right on the Opening Page, we've been writing about the Box for some time now.

It will be easier on you if you purchase a Shop Manual for your car and read it.

My math Teacher tsked tsked us one day after an exam, he told us we weren't lazy enough for math.....

Make it easy on yourself.

What do you consider as the "opening page"?

SHIM KIT vs STEERING WHEEL PLAY

Does anyone have an idea about where to start other than installing and / or removing paper shims?

I think I may have one .28 and two .6 shims now in the box if memory serves.

Does removal of a .6 equate to 2 inches of wheel play removal?

Will be in the ARC Shop for two days next week, Th and Fri
