Stud Story

So I have a couple of studs I need to replace on the right rear hub. Thanks to all your help I finally got the hub off and then stood there scratchin, "now what?"

Can any good mechanic with a press get the old studs out and press in the new ones? I thought I saw mention somewhere in the Barn that this can be done at NAPA or any other decent parts store? Any Granite Stater's know of somewhere good?

Also, should I take out the bearings for safe keeping if I'm gonna send it out for work or will they be fine?

Hey! Its snowin out! Looky that!

Removal requires a special tool that cuts the shoulder / swag off, pressing it out as is can result in a bent drum. The new one needs to be swaged in with a special swagging tool and at least a 40 ton press.

I can verify that pounding out the studs with a hammer is a sure way to bend the flange.

I was young and foolish once. Now now so young. But hopefully a lot smarter.

My problem, Joe, "I'm too soon OLDT, & too late SCHMARDT" (Dog:cool: thinks I'm "142" I.Q. What's "I.Q." mean??) bILL w.

When you are replacing the drum the hole saw and the special cutter will cut the swage and save the hub, but some of the drum will be cut too, if you are just replacing a stud or 2 drilling the head of the stud off from inside the drum and pressing the piece out will save the chamfer on the drum, an old wristpin with ground to a taper on the outside and a proper sized hole will swage a few studs (2-5) before it gets damaged ---I think the last time I used small block chevy pins I found under the press(scrap)
