Anybody make a fixture/guide set up to drill out broken head studs? I know the Model A guys have them, I have a 21 stud engine with a couple of broken studs, thanks

If your going to drill out the broken bolt and install a heli coil, just install the head with about 4 bolts and a 7/16 heli coil drill will fit the head bolt hole perfect. Walt

I had a drill bushing ground on the OD to fit the stud hole in the head. I install the head and the bushing allows me to drill through the center of the broken stud with a pilot drill I can increase the drill size and drill the entire body out after removing the bushing, then pick the threads clean, if necessary.

Reverse drill bits, usually available from tool companies such as "Snap On Tools" can help a lot. Start with small pilot bit and usually before more than just a couple of bits the bit will catch and unscrew it.

i built a drill bushing like this to drop into the stud hole in the head. i.d. is the tap drill size.

I used the same method that Walt used and it works well as the bit is the right diameter to fit the head holes. The only problem then is how to run the tap squarely into the hole so that the threads will be square with the deck. A person could make a device that would bolt to the block and fit the shank of the tap or use a magnetic base drill press mounted to the deck to run the tap.

I mig weld a washer to the broken stud with a hole just big enough to cover the stub. then weld a 3/4" nut to it while it's still hot turn the nut and walla they come out. the heat from the welding breaks the bond and they come out easly. You can turn the heat up when you weld the nut on. Works for me never had one fail. Frank pkny
