Stuck valve....I'd guess??

I'm with those who think we have a way too retarded ignition timing situation. Just the statement that it starts good when the lever is advanced is kind of a major clue. I am guessing of course but kind of agree with Purdy on the backlash-some of these cars have so much backlash and if you dont know how to account for it when setting the timing you can be way off. So I would ask-with the distributor cam screwed down tight, how much movement clockwise and counter-clockwise would you say you have? Half an inch would be no surprise, I have even seen more. Purdy is describing how to take care of this when setting the timing-it took me a while to get it through my thick head some time back but once I did, it was amazing how well a Model A performs when it is timed right.

If it's been sitting a long time, "maybe" mice have left "deposits" that are restricting the exhaust pipe/muffler??
Rev it up & listen for a HIIIIIISS at the tailpipe! Bill W.

Thanks Bill.........that is one thing I totally never even thought to check!!!
Dodge, Worked on a "NO START" Jaguar XKE. The WHOLE exhaust system was PACKED full of Maize!! Bill W.
(If it's plugged, Chief would lean the whole exhaust system, with the front down, pour some diesel in it, & light it with newspaper from the bottom to burn out the mice deposits. It'll "ROAR" like a chimmney! DANGER, DON'T USE GAS!!!!!:eek:)
