hello fellas, my 1949 pickup is stuck in third gear and i think its because of one of the three clips (see picture). there are 3 clips, i dont know that name of them but anyways they are next to the brass syncros. one of the clips does not go down like the other 2 to let the gear slide over.......what do i need to do. i really dont want to pull the transmisson out. 1949 007.jpg

Kendall,
Take a screw driver and CAREFULLY push the offending key down. you
should then be able to slide the syncro ring into place. Once it snaps into the
middle and 1st /rev gear is centered the trans is in neutral. The problem or at
least part of the problem is the keys are pressed steel....I much perfer the solid steel
keys to the pressed steel. The solid steel keys seem to stay put much better
than the pressed steel.
You might also look at the 2nd/3rd fork, it may be bent somewhat and
pushing the ring too far forward.

i tryed taking a screw driver and doing as you requested charlie but the key will not move, do i dare tap the screw driver with a hammer to see if it will go?......

Generally, you have to break down the gearset to fix that. As Charlie suggested, sometimes you can sneak the insert back, but if the wire retaining clip is not in position, you just have to do this in the long version.

thanks guys, i guess i will be pulling the ****** out, mac should i replace any parts as long as i am doing this? if the key is bad, do you have the parts or know where i can get parts?

We should have all the parts you may need, including the little inserts and the wire springs if needed. You may want to get a copy of our book ("Ins and Outs of Early Ford Transmissions").
