Stromberg Leak Help

This should not be a surprise to me, but one of my Strombergs has developed a leak. It's enough to spread gas over and out the hood louvers and makes a stain. See the photos. The gas is coming from a small hole that has opened up on the front of the float bowl cover. It looks as though there was a small plug there that may have come out. I'm tempted to plug it with some gas resistant sealer, but I don't want a big red blob of goop there. Are there any suggestions??

That hole is probably a vent to equalize atmospheric pressure so you do not develop a vacuum inside the bowl. Having said that I am not familiar with that particular carburetor and may be completely wrong! :)

The rear carb just behind this one has no such hole.... and this is a new development...

I would plug it. One of my 97's had two holes. ( see front carb, just above the fuel inlet) I believe that were from broken locating pins (could be wrong). None of my other ones have it or have i seen it before, until now on yours. Mine is on the other side from your tho. :p:p

The float chamber is vented where the accelerator pump shaft goes thru the top.

I do want to plug it, but with what?

Just a note, does that third carb rub a little on the firewall? :)

No, no rubbing on the firewall. As you can see there is enough room for the distributor back there.

I plugged the holes with a small piece of tapered aluminum rod that I epoxied in.

I would think you could plug it with JB Weld. I also wonder if the float valve is right, because the fuel shouldn't be that high to come out the hole.

Elec or mech fuel pump , to much pressure . I've had these carb not leak when running but leak after you shut her down, the new fuel boil and pressure hold between pump and carb.

I had a similar problem with the Stromberg 97 on the '36 Ford. The float level is out of whack, set wrong. Jere Jobe out in Montana did a rebuild on it for me after I was having a few other problems. Did a fantastic job but he is dealing w/ some health issues right now and isn't taking on any new work last I talked to him about a month ago. He is THE best on Stromberg's.

Also, Jere told me that a supplier had 1,000 Stromberg 97's built in China some time ago, they didn't give the Chinese much to work on only reverse engineering stuff, and those carbs are absolute junk. Those will never be right. The ones coming out of England are good quality.

Maybe you wound up with one of the junk carbs some are trying to peddle off thru the hobby.

Tap it to whatever size is dictated by the size of the hole and put a short truss head machine screw in it. You may or may not need to put a fibre washer under the head of the screw.
