I just found a seriously odd repair and wonder if any of you have seen this...
I just bought a box of Stromberg 81 bases and main bodies from someone and started cleaning them up...
You have all seen Strombergs with the main casting cracked around the area of the inlet hole and that section bent away...common damage on carbs that have been on engines rolled around in a junkyard or in the back of a pickup. Hopeless throwaway castings.
Well...on this 81 as I cleared away the grease and dead spiders, I found that the section mentioned had been apparently WELDED back into place! The metal in the bead matched the carb exactly. They must have used a sliver of a worse Stromberg as their welding rod. The bead was very neat and precise, and I think if it were ground flat would be invisible. Definitely a weld, not solder, not goo, metal melted into the base metal.
Never saw anything like that...I think a very skilled pro job, maybe something done at a commercial rebuilder long ago...?? Maybe WWII period, a time when the V8-60 was actually valuable for mileage with rationed gas and parts were scarce??
