Stromberg 97 rebuilding instructions

I have a passion for the Strombergs..97s, 81s, 48s and LZs..I like taking them apart and see what other have done to them, sometimes very interesting..I beleive that most people don't realize how many tricks can be done with the strombergs..
I enjoy bring back to life a Hot Rod Historical item..
I think they are popular because they are easy to rebuild and tune, if you have the right tools and knowledge..
KEEP THOSE STROMBERGS ALIVE..
Duane..
Obviously, you missed the ceremony at Bonneville in 2009 where I knelt before Clive on the Salt and was Knighted with a facsimile 36" accelerator pump rod. :D
This year in August, we'll be inducting new members into The Stromberg Hall of Fame... Qualified contenders will have the hands of a surgeon, the prowess & mind of an Einstein and the aura & looks of Mel Gibson. Hope to see you there!!

The Stromberg is like the possum, primitive beyond the dinosaurs and yet still here...
when the last Holleys and Rochesters on the planet have been replaced by digital fuel injection, I would predict that the last carbs running will be Strombergs, just as the possums will still be here after we finish burying ourselves in our own garbage!

Can a set of 97s be built without fear of leakage and fire? I have a set of 4 for my motor, but I don't want to burn the car up.

Yes. Good gaskets, work the lid flat against a good straight piece of metal, do not overtighten, and keep fuel pressure low.
Most lids are going to be a bit warped when you get them because of overtightening of the center screw, followed by more overtightening because the first overtightening warped the lid...

Spotfacing the gasket surfaces on the jet and drain plug areas goes a long way.
And a little Hylomar on the floatpin threads stops those unsightly stains.

max, I taking that as a invitation and I thank you, (I'm better looking then Mel Gibson, I have hands that any woman would love, and my IQ is 157), do I qualify.. I think the quality of the new stromberg parts is top shelf.. I will be at Bonneville this years as part of a pit-crew, I'm really looking forward to being there.
I don't like taking any material off the face of the air horn, the flange is weak enough. I use a rubber mallet and place the air horn on a machnist plate and with gentle strokes and patience they will flatten out..

I think Strombergs are loved BECAUSE they are primitive, leaky, and endlessly entertaining!
I love playing with them but have always driven the Ford 94...that one had no problems, until our wonderful aftermarket started supplying worthless pumps and power valves and lord knows what else.[/QUOTE]

Any idea if the new Edelbrock 94 parts will fit on the originals? If so, that would be great!

All,
Each to his own....I must agree 97's have the history. My brother spent a
few interesting years in Europe from '42 thru '45 and kept 'em running for the guys
that did the real work. According what Ray has told me an aircraft filter was retro-
fitted on all Fords in his battalion, most had or were changed to Strombergs. The leak
thing was pretty much cured by clamping the air horn on to a flat plate and warming
it up so spit would sizzle on it. After cooling and a light dust off with 100 grit paper
the leak pretty much was under control. Ray always set the float .025 lower with
no adverse effects. His sergeant insisted that no screw be tightened past the
collapse point of the lock washer...Ray told me he went just a tad more.
To my surprise the Germans used lots of Fords in WWII....I'm drifting
forgive me.

P.S. I guess that's why I'm so attached to Strombergs

Max I once heard you are a double for Mel Gibson :) I don't know about the mind of Einstein or the surgeon hands but we do know you are one of the best Stromberg carb builders here in the USA.
