I hope some of you guys can give me some sound advice here. Engine is a stock recently rebilt 21 stud with a single 97 carb. Car doesn't get driven much. Has been running poorly, stalling out instead of idling. I found the carb was far out of adjustment (don't know how that happened, I certainly didn't do it). While I was trying to adjust the idle I noticed gas on top of the carb. Not good. About every 5 to ten seconds there was a tiny spurt of gas coming out of the hole for the accelerator pump piston shaft. I took the carb apart and compared it with the rebuild kit instructions I had saved from several years ago. The exploded view in these instructions shows a single small spring (9640) on the piston shaft. Using this diagram, this was the way I set it up when I rebuilt the carb. The carb work okay for several years. But because I wanted a better diagram, I consulted the green bible which indicated that there should actually be TWO springs on the piston shaft, the small 9640 and a much larger lower spring (9636) plus some attaching hardware. I found the missing hardware in my old parts can and reassembled the carb using a brand new accelerator pump piston and both springs as shown in the green bible. The 9634 felt washer at the top was brand new also. I cleaned the carb and blew out all passages with compressed air before reassembly.
Bottom line here is that the rebuilt carb is STILL spurting gas out the hole at the top of the carb horn, and I am afraid to drive the car. I've done everything I can think of to do. Can anybody suggest a fix?
I should mention I use a Grose Jet for the inlet valve, but that shouldn't make any difference.
