hi..just wondering if anyone had an idea why my 97 is leaking..actually its sweating at the top of the carb when its not running..kinda looks like its coming thru the felt at hole for the acc pump?..i can wipe it off and then hrs later its all over the top again..the flat area on the carb..is this a fuel level prob??thing is it just started to do this.its the back carb..the front one isnt as bad.very little at all..im not really crying about it sweating.just was wonder why it was doing it?
thanks

you should check the float level,
you can also check it with the top off and the motor running.

In addition to checking float level setting, make sure the needle or ball valve is working properly. If the needle is rubber tipped it could be deteriorating from the alcohol in the gas. Also, check fuel pressure from fuel pump to carburetor. I believe it should be in the 2-3 psi range.

X2, ditto, JM nailed it.

I don't know if you picked up on what Lawrie said but you can run the stromberg with the top of the carb removed. You watch and see the fuel level as it runs and see how the needle valve is working. As the bow fills up the needle valve is open and starts closing as the bowl fills. When full the needle valve is fully closed and as fuel is used the needle valve should open right now but a lot of needle valves stick and have a delayed opening. This is observed by the fuel in the bowl changing level by about 1". This can also be seen on a pressure gauge in the line between the pump and carb. When the valve is closed you will see about 3 lbs and as the fuel level drops the pressure go's down to 1 1/2 lbs when the bowl is empty and the needle valve is wide open. The pressure rises as the bowl fills and the needle valve closes. This cycle repeats it self constantly while running and at a faster cycle as RPMs are increased and more fuel is used. With the double ball needle valve that Uncle Max sells the balls are the valve and the fuel level has hardly any noticeable change in it's level. The balls just jiggle and on the fuel gauge you may see 2 1/2 lbs steady with the needle of the gauge just giggleing a little. A really good needle valve will act almost as good but I haven't seen to many that are smooth. I had flooding or starving on my 39 (w/ strom) 28 years ago. It was random and may not show up for months but happen from time to time. I put a ball valve in and never had the problem in 28 years. Old sticky fuel will cause any valve to hang up. Marvel Mystery Oil in every tank of fuel will prevent this and sticky engine valves which come with this new fuel. When running with the top off anjust the level a little lower to start out and have a fire exting. handy. The same when useing starter fluid. G.M.

If you do what's being suggested here on removing the carburetor top, I would strongly suggest doing this with the car outside of the garage and a couple of good fire extinguishers handy. JMO

thanks guys..i heard about running the carb with the tops off.kinda scares me tho..i have on e needle valve that has the ball in it in the front carb..its not as bad.so teh back carb has the old style valve.so mayb it took a crap with the corn gas sitting for a month or so..the carbs were gone thru before i got them.they work well.just have that sewating now.which just started recently..i think the float level is ok.but i can look again.mayb the needle valve has some dirt or somthing in it causing the gas to sip by..should there be gas in the carb dripping if this is happening?
