Stromberg 81 on a stock A

The way I stay ahead of the game is by doing my own work.94's are cheap next to 97's,find them at the swaps for next to nothing. clean them, kit them and off you go...I grab them to harvest early power valves, the new ones on the market today are sketchy.

Yeah see I am not about to start doing that – whereas I could get a 97 fully rebuilt without leaving home.

I think Charlie Price has his own design power valve, I rebuilt a 94, but will buy the power valve from Charlie, you can check him out on Youtube rebuilding one.

Good luck with the Charlie Price power valve, been there. I've found original holley valves to be the best. A lot of folks rebuild them, Max and Charlie from NY on the flathead forum both have good reputations. You can buy a brand new 97 if you want. I'm foolish enough to do all my own work, and most of the time it shows, at the end of the day you have to please yourself.

Can a good power valve be purchased at Holley? if so, which one would you recommend?

That's the problem,a new 'good' valve isn't available.i grabbed a few junk ones, they are cheap and plentiful.
Holley 94's don't have the name and 'prestige' Strombergs do..but if you stick with it and find or build a good one it's a superior carb to the 97..

Do the 94s require a fuel pump? I've heard that some downdraft carbs will run on gravity, especially if you're not flogging it, but I can't remember which ones.

I have run without a pump, but the Stromberg is not happy with it. At higher revs, they starve for gas. But then, I have two carbs to feed... Better to have 1 1/2 to 2 pounds of pressure...

Both the 97 and the 94 benefit from 1 to 2 lbs.. for flow, not pressure. The Stromberg is an emulsion tube design, its dependent on fuel bowl level, the Holley not as much, but no carburetor likes to be starved. I run a carter rotary electronic pump used on aircooled vw's..no regulator needed,2 psi outlet pressure.

I run my 97 without the pump, but I make sure I have a full tank of gas with my wider fuel line, and not try to go over 65mph.
