I am running a 97 on my pickup. And yes it has been re-jetted by my engine builder.

I also run a 97. Previously ran an 81 but the 97 improved the power a lot, so think a 48 would be fine. Normally stock jets are the ones needed, the carb only knows how much air is flowing thru it, so adds the proper amount of gas. I run 3 of the 81's on my speedster, with all stock jets and it runs great and gets very good gas mileage.

Don't rule out a Holley 94 carb! I tried the 81 and the 97 Strombergs, but wasn't satisfied. On a lark, I installed a Holley 94 and I love it! It has good throttle response, a higher top end, good idle, and improved gas mileage, all compared to the original updraft carb. No rejetting was required, either. These carbs and their variants were used for two decades or so by FoMoCo, so there are lots of 'em around and relatively cheap. Rebuild or just gasket kits are readily available on-line.
