stripped 97 power valve help!

got a set of matching chrome 97 carbs.i took them apart and one of the power valves was stripped so i drilled and tried to tap but no luck can it be repaired.i'm bummed cause they look great on my thickstun and other than the valve they are in great shape.thanks, ray

my advice is to take it to a good machine shop. i had one that was so stuck, i messed with it for 2-3 years and finally took it to johnson machine in rapid city sd, they had the power valve out in 10 minutes. now that yours has been drilled it may take a little more doing than mine did. a few years ago someone told me that he cut the nub off the bottom of the valve and worked it out that way and he used jb weld to put it back together. the guy said it worked fine for him but he had skills i don't have. good luck, never say die.

Yes, it can be repaired but is not a job for the average mechanic. I covered a similar repair in my book. The special repair insert must have side holes to coordinate with the internal carb passages and must be sealed at the OD and allow for the valve gasket to seal at the top face.

If all else fails, I probably have an old chrome center-section, in decent shape with all good threads.
PM me if interested.

okk,
If the well is in place I have the fixture to make this repair.
If the well is messed up or broken out on the bottom any type of repair
is a bit dangerous. You can burn a car up real quick........Take Uncle
Max up on his offer.

okk,
I'd be happy to try to repair the threads....I have a nice little
shop but can't guarantee success. The well is somewhat fragile and pattern
shift often causes an off center condition, your call.........In the meantime
give Uncle Max a call and latch onto a sure thing.....if it passes thru Max'
hands its good.

'34,
Uncle Max or JWL might chime in here, but I'm pretty sure NOT running a PV
is NOT a good idea. Without a PV you're motor will go lean under high load conditions,
high speeds, passing, drag racing. The accelerator pump gives the motor a quick shot
of fuel...the power valve takes over with a ' long shot ' of fuel.

Charlie said it right. If the power valve is not used the main jets should be increased by approximately 3 sizes to be "safe". That would put all running conditions, except wide open throttle, overly rich. The blocked power valve situation could be used in a "secondary" carb where the linkage activates that carb at near wide open conditions.
