Strange stoppage in the 33.

Was rolling down the highway in my V8 ford, when all of the sudden it began to stumble and finally died. Luck had me about a 1/2 mile from the barn. I could not restart engine. It had fire, has new skip coil, vertex condensor. I pulled it home. This morning, engine started right up, drove it a mile, and it went to missing again. I was barely able to get back home. I pulled the top off of my fuel pump, and the brass screen was a dirty/oily. I removed/cleaned it with carb cleaner, and the engine started right up. I drove it a couple of miles and put it in the barn. This is a 36 engine with early fuel pump, no sediment bowl. I have been running a little MMO In every tank. Thoughts???????

Sounds like there is crud getting into the fuel from somewhere. I would put a filter in the line or add a sediment bowl and see what it picks up.

In you Garage, get the car to die again, then, spray some starter fluid into the carb intake(Stromberg?) see if it starts. If it does then you know it is the fuel. Did you recently buy gas? Maybe you got bad gas..It happens. It would be ironic if LotsofGas4You Got Bad Gas!!!

Ha, thanks Frank, I did drain gas, after I cleaned the fine brass screen with carb cleaner, and added fresh, no ethanol gas, engine fired right up. Maybe too much MMO, or something in gas, brass screen sure had a film/crud on it. Thanks again

Hi Everyone. lotsagas, how old is the fuel hose between the firewall and the fuel pump? Could be the inside of that is breaking down?

Could have been the prior tank of ethanol gas with gas separation loosing up the gunk in the tank and other places causing some clogging of the fuel system?

Check the terminal ends of the battery cables, both where they connect to the engine ground and the starter solenoid, and the battery posts. If they get loose, system voltage drops, causing a stumble or stoppage. All connections must be clean and tight
