Straight 6 Performance?

Just starting to mentally work my way thru a future project. Starting with a bone stock 28 model A frame and thinking of engine ideas. Im not even sure if it would fit very good but is there much to a straight 6 flatty for performance improvements without breaking the bank? Already have an 8ba in the 48 pickup so I wanted something different. Any thoughts? Thanks. Luke

A few rodders back in the day used G model 6-cylinder engines. They are long so the radiator has to go forward, body back, modify fire wall, or a little bit of all three items.

Just my thoughts, we have a 49 or 50 Marmon Herrington low mile fire truck that
previous owner stripped for F1 parts. So we put a 6 cyl in there just to move it in
and out of the shop. Very impressive very smooth got power & quiet too. Maybe its
my brain 'dead idea) but its all about the charisma of a V8 however the starter has
the same V8 unmistakable sound.....hit it & its a runnin

You will have to move the radiator out and lengthen the hood (or put a very large "notch" in the firewall. You will spend a lot of time and money and end up with something that doesn't look good and will be almost impossible to sell. I would say forget the idea.

Do not use a G 226 Ford. I know I just rebuilt one and oil pump internal parts are not available. I did find 9N Ford tractor oil pump bushings are the same but the internal gears are not and are not made. With that said I do not know if any f the V8 oil pump internal gears are the same. i got lucky and found NOS parts

The H motor is very similar to the G in most regards, although it uses the later distributor. Very good performance - it will actually beat a V8 in a short drag. Parts should be readily available. I have one in my '48 F-1 and find it a very satisfactory power plant.

Get a 254 from a big truck and put the 226 head on it then you get a fun inline.
A bit of camshaft on that and of to beat the V8´s ;)

Had a 47 Coupe with a stock G series 6 cyl and ran 3:54 gears with a Columbia . That 6 cyl had no problems pulling it around, plenty of torque.

They have a lot of torque hence the reason for thinking of putting one in. But those A frames are pretty tiny!

The V8 will just barely fit in the 28/29. The early 24 stud ones like the 81A with the short snout crank can be made to fit easier but the later long snout crank types through 48 usually take some work on the front cross member. An 8BA dressed like a 59A will fit just like it. Makes it look more old timey. You have to use the 59A type cam to use the crab distributor front end though but the early gen/fan and water pumps help with fit.

If you don't want a v8 (which is hard for me to understand! :) ) why not use a Model A/B ? You can hop them up.
