A friend of mine told me today about his car quitting on him while driving. Has happen several times although each time he has been able to restart it. Any ideas why this happens?
Thanks for your time.

I'd say if it just turns off electrical short some where. start checking ensuring all connections are bright/clean and tight. Could be gas flow???

Having an unvented fuel cap comes to mind.
It will stop the car by preventing fuel flow.

What did he check immediately upon stopping?
Fuel flow?
Spark?

I had the same thing happen about 3 weeks ago. I had a piece of junk stuck in the needle seat inside the carb. The car would run on what was in the bowl of the carb and then die. While I was scratching my head, a tiny amount of gas would trickle by the debris in the needle seat and the bowl would slowly fill up. So, the car would start right up again after sitting for about a minute, but would die again after about 30 seconds.

The furrel on the end of the fuel line, that enters the sediment bowl will sometimes allow the fuel line to extend too far in, restricting the flow intermitantly.

Another possible suspect is the pigtail wire from the upper plate to the lower plate in the distributor. As you're advancing or retarding the spark it can short and kill the engine. Then when you move the spark lever again it "unshorts" and allows it to start again.

This happened to me one of the first times I drove my A. I had the GAV open too much and as I was going along the car just quit. I had no idea how to adjust that valve but now that I do, I no longer have the car just die on me.
