Hey Guys- I have a stone guard, and whether you like them or not, I need to know how best they are installed? Can anyone explain or take a pic of the best way to mount to prevent damage?
msmaron,
No, I bought it from a guy on eBay, and then got the mounting set separately. Does each large bracket grab the guard on each side and the rubber bumpers top and bottom?
Follow-up question, there's no way I can get the stone guard clips into my radiator shell holes with the wiring conduit and rubber grommets. Very tight!
Just wondering what others have done? Leave off the grommets, or cut them?
Slide the conduit out of the rubber grommet, slide the hook between the radiator shell and the grommet, replace the conduit. You can usually do it with out disconnecting any head light wires. I have one on a tudor but it just didn't look right on the pickup.
I tried to install it today but found the bracket arms that hold the guard are too short and don't allow the guard to center properly. The screws are hitting on my radiator shell and keeping the screen to one side.
I wonder if I have an older screen that has an issue or a bad set of brackets? Not sure which.
Yes, actually that validates that my clip is mounted correctly and yet my guard won't center...I wonder if I have an old and odd guard that was made improperly. Hmm, Okay thanks.
I believe Mac's web-site has instructions for mounting. I had to remove one on my 29 Roadster to pull water pump. Best to get a helper. The clip attached to guard will damage rad fins. I snaked some wire around clip and put tension to keep clip away from rad as helper pulled up on guard. Side clips are tough to get on. Put grommets on first and install clips. My wife's little hand worked wonders in securing small bolt and nut. Good luck. Worked fine for me. Same procedure for reinstalling with wire around clip.
Use two rubber insulated pipe clamps that fit the headlight bar and a couple SST pan head machine screws through the screening. That locates the rock shield a couple inches out from the radiator. Do not use the clips that fit into the radiator shell/headlight conduit holes. Do keep the bracket on the bottom of the screen and the rubber feet. A fellow at an Amana Model A Day used this method to save his nicely buffed shell. Good idea that works great!
