Stock Distributor Conversion for 12 Volt

What needs to be done to the Distributor when converting to a 12 Volt System? I had a Nu-rex breakerless, but want to go back to stock. Why does my old Distributor short out?

Stock, nothing is needed but a coil with a resistor, either internal or external.

The wire between the bottom plate and top plate may be rubbing on the body of the distributor. Have you checked the condition of that?

If you are switching voltage on the Nu-Rex, you need to have the correct module for the voltage you are running.

Thanks Jason!

I'll look close and see it there's something grounding between the plates.

The coil that I'm using is the one for the Nu-rex, will that be ok, or will I need a resistor?

If my engine problem persists after I install the old Distributor, I'll eventually want to go back to the nu-rex.

I think for a Nu-rex your switch controls the hot wire to the ignition and
with the stock ignition the switch controls the ground side. If that is
the case then you now have a short to ground when the points are closed.

Bob,

I think you're on to something! It's been about five years since I dealt with the nu-rex, it's hard to remember. What do I need to do to solve the problem?

The main wire in the case has one wire. The nu-rex wire in the case has two wires.

I'm currenty using the one wire set-up. Do I need to use the two wire?

Just measure the primary voltage coming out of the coil, needs to be no more than 8v. Points do not live long on 12v. Coil polarity should be the same as battery.
