Looking for real world experience with the Stipe 3/4 cam.

Heres are some engine specs:
1932 B .125 over
Standard size modern valves
Valve spring spacers
Thomas 6.5 head
Thomas dual intake w/ 2 81’s
Custom header 1 5/8 primary’s, merge collector and 2” main tube diameter
Lightened flywheel
T5 transmission

The cam is a Stipe Winfield 3/4
Lift .317 int / .310 exh
Duration 260° int / 254° exh on seat, 220° int / 213° exh @.050

My question is because this is my first banger.
How is this cam going to sound?
How is this cam going to perform?
What cams are available that are more aggressive?

I understand a B cam is .330 lift

I come from the v8 world and I would never run a cam this small in one of my v8 engines.
I always overcam my engines because, to me, the sound at idle is much more important than driveability.

Thank you for any and all insight

Well, I can't give you 'real world' experience with Bill's Winfield grind however I have raced many a Banger engine in my past, and I have installed many IB330 & a few IB340 cams in customer's Touring engines.

While I am not down in my shop to look at a IB330 card, my memory is that Bill tightened the centerline up a tad more on the 330 & 340 cams and the duration is about 10° more than your Winfield. Based on that, my guess is your engine is going to have a pretty mild idle. Also, 6½:1 compression ratio is not going to give much of a ragged idle either, so unless you can get around 8 or better, then not much help there either.

In my Track Roadster, I had a 7:1 Head with a 330 cam, but a 23# Flywheel. It had a nice rough idle that everyone liked, but in true transparency, it honestly did not run as good as it sounded. A lighter Flywheel will probably give you the sound you are looking for. The downside is it will be a turd driving from stop light to stop light, ...even with the T-5.

FWIW, a stock Flathead V8 with a set of glasspacks will always sound better idling through the Fairgrounds over even a cammed Flathead Banger motor. What impresses bystanders with a banger is how quick they will rev,-even under a load. As they generally say, You will never spend more money on an Engine to go slow than what you will on a Flathead. That applies to both an 8 cylinder or a 4 cylinder!! :o

Good luck with your project, -and good to see you posting after lurking for 15 years!! :D :D.

A bit of technical stuff ...

Supposedly a stock engine with a "B" cam. Note how the power is good even at 1100 revs.

"These are excellent performers for A and B Ford 4 cylinder engines. 340Touring cam has excellent torque 1600 to 3000 RPM range. Best run with larger intake valves and Weber carb & 6 or 7 to1 C.R. Head"

I gather IB means "Improved B"

I don't have any actual experience with 3/4 cams in Model A engines, but I do have some history. In the 50's the 3/4 cams were popular with the V8 hot rod crowd. The drive-in restaurant was the meeting place on Saturday night. The rods with the 3/4 cams had a loopy idle. It was a badge of distinction. That and three, dual barrel carburetors with no air filters. I can still hear the idle in my mind.

My high school buddies noticed that a six cylinder with one spark plug disconnected sounded that way, too.

That short a lift would seem to indicate it's a cam for an OHV engine.
Jim Brierley's cam list has flathead Winfield cams listed as:
Dur Lift
266 .350 Winfield 1R grind - fast action, decent idle
285 .362 Winfield 1A grind - good competition cam

For OHV w/1.5:1 rocker

288 .316 M-102 grind good short track, or max for street

Brent, thank you
Due to life, I had to take 9 years off of my coupe.
But I am back on it now
