Still working on engine start

I believe all the help the forum provided will enable me to continue to try to start the 1929 roadster engine. Found bad condenser. Now have spark with all electrical checks passed. Thanks. However developed new problem that prevents me from going further - Starter hangs up and stays engaged. Will stop after 30 seconds or so. Should I pull starter and bring to local model a shop for inspection? Or simple fix for me. Thanks in advance for reply.

Sometimes the teeth on the ring gear will be damaged and cause this. Remove the starter and inspect the ring gear on the flywheel.

Also make sure the spark is retarded (all the way up) whenever you try and start the car. Otherwise starter damage can occur if the engine tries to kick back.

The shaft can also be bent.
Look for loose bolts attaching the bendix to the starter. there are keepers under each of the 2 special bolts that loose ears from being opened and closed. the parts houses carry replacement keepers.

Sometimes, a LITTLE grease, brushed on the flywheel teeth will help in engagement/ dis-engagement. NO, it WON'T get flung off & get in the CLUTCH!

Thanks for help. Pulled starter spring ok. Removed starter switch. Inspection showed copper plate bend to low in switch. Hence wouldn't release. Bending to reshape did not work. Apparently it took permanent new shape - replaced - issue resolved. Engine started however getting too much gas. Float may have hole in it. Local shop has carb and will inspect - do what's necessary and try on their car. Getting closer and learning so so much. Car would run will gas shut off. Carb filling with gas. Will keep you posted. Thanks for all replies.

The carb is pretty simple and you can learn to repair it. Take it one step at a time. This is a hobby, and it is supposed to be enjoyable.
The best part is you get to enjoy driving it and meeting others with the same hobby.
