My experience with spring is - it varies.
For a while a go-to for parts for the Model A was JC Whitney. Starting out with my truck (avatar) I had trouble with the left front wheel getting clobbered by the underside of the fender support - which I then put to "worn out spring."
To solve the issue I placed my order for a replacement spring with the then JC Whitney, which immediately on arrival I saw wasn't precisely the spring the car came with.
For instance, the leaves were all cut off "square." (Model A are "tapered" at the end of the leaves. )
And the spring seemed considerably "stiffer" than even my worn out original. The JC Whitney spring was 8 leaves, those leaves considerably "thicker" than the original Ford.
As in - the JC Whitney spring was a recycled trailer spring which just happened to fit the eye to eye dimension of the Model A front shackles.
Eventually the fender/tire issue was traced back to a bent frame - which was straightened almost "in place" with a strongback. Meanwhile, I have looked for a "new" spring.
Travis Cook (Connecticut) USED to be the place to go for a correct front spring. Alas Travis decided to hang up his track shoes with Covid and get out of the business.
There are other producers of front springs. I have mentioned in other threads having bought a new front spring from Macs, then breaking it down and carefully measuring each leaf and checking it against Brent in Tenn front spring drawing - which exists at
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2143838&postcount=6 The MACs spring seems consistent with what was originally used on the Model A - including pre-load (breaking the spring down one has to keep in mind pre-load COULD be a reason to take care removing the center bolt.)
Many would rather go with a used but good condition front spring. Looking at Brent's drawing one can see that the "pre-loading" of each leaf is small, and becomes smaller or non-existent in time and use. It is possible to cold-bend to restore the pre-load on a used or flattened spring.
Anyway, for now I've gone with MACS and while the spring seems satisfactory (and now lubricated/repainted in reassembly) only when I get the body reassembled will I know for sure.
