Stiff Fuel Pumps?

I have been buying new in the box fuel pumps for my 59A engine at the swap meet. Mindlessly I buy more because they all are uniformly so stiff in operation (and cheap) that they could be dumped on that market as defective. I just can't work them with my hands. Dare I use one of them? Thanks: Fred A

There is no clue to the age of the pumps which makes the diaphragm a prudent upgrade. Thanks: Fred A

Related question: How long is too long on the shelf? I have a spare that Charlie NY did for me. Just curious how long folks think it can sit before it should be "refreshed".

That depends on your personal experience as a gambling man. As a teenager, I used to carry a wallet that boasted of a circular imprint of a certain product composed of rubber, but when it came time to use it, I wisely declined to gamble on its viability.
