Stiff Clutch Release

37Flat

Just finished rebuilding the transmission and everything works fine - until I installed the Clutch Release Shaft. New Bushings went in smoothly, but when I went to put the new Shaft in I had to lightly tap it into place. It's so stiff that the Throw-out Bearing Spring can't bring it back into place. The Arm 7511 will also have to be tapped into place, so I'm thinking it's the Shaft, not the Bushings.

Is this normal for these new parts (Mac's)? Is this something that will break in, or something I have to fix or return to the seller?

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thought I was down to the easy part.

A lot of the pressed in bearings require sizing with an appropriate reamer. A lot just depends on how tight the clearances are. If you got it in there at all then it's close. It may only need another .001" out of them. A lot of folks aren't fans of the adjustable reamers but there are other alternatives. You might be able to lap them in but make sure you remove all the abrasive as best you can.

I had the same issue when rebuilding my 37 ******. I honed those bushings with an old brake cylinder hone. Leave the bushings in the trans. Hone them very slowly and gently, until the shaft goes in by hand. Put a little grease on the shaft, install it, and then squirt some grease in the two zerk fittings while the trans is still out.
