Sticking throttle

Have a 272 2v, manual choke, Fordomatic 55 Customline. Got a bit of a rush the other day as I was coming into a curve my throttle stuck wide open. After mashing the accel pedal several times I was able to get it kicked down and stayed on the road. It happened again on a straight road. Typically I must kick the gas pedal as I'm coming to a stop light or I'll sit there with a higher idle and hope the brakes hold but this was like a passing gear acceleration.
Anyway, is this chronic for these years? Any suggestions (obvious or otherwise) on what to look for? Could it be more than a carb/linkage adjustment or perhaps the kickdown rod to the AT?
Thanks for any info.

Its a standard setup ?? Its probably binding in the bell crank then, don't drive it till its sorted. Have a good look at it and clean and grease is with light lube..

has the carb been rebuilt? if so, possibly the throttle butterflies are not centered in the throttle bores

Do you have the adjustment procedure? The carb-****** linkage adjustment is very critical for any of it to work right. I have it for mine and it still took more than once to get it right, but when I did, it all just fell in place and shifted better too. Also, did you check the return spring? I had one break years ago and the only thing that saved me was turning the engine off.

If you're having trouble tracking down which part is sticking you can try disconnecting the linkage in a couple spots and moving those pieces separately from the rest.
It could be debris under the gas pedal, binding where the rod passes thru the firewall, the kick-down rod catching on something under the firewall, worn linkage/parts on the carb itself, or the throttle plates sticking in the bore.

Heck, this is a hairy situation... I had a similar issue on a 68 opel I had. The linkage to the carb was made thru ball joints. One of them got free of its housing at hard throttle (missing retaining pin) and kept the engine at high revs...
I'm sure you had noticed if it was something of this sort.
Lub the linkages and check. Cant help much further.
Good luck.

Been down that road and it was the gas pedal, the link with it's mushroom tip will wobble when the rubber socket in the pedal is worn and rub against the side of the hole in the firewall and hang up.

Thanks to all for the responses so far. I've got to get busy with this - wasting good cruzin weather!
