steomberg 97 Issues

They all look the same in pictures. is there that difference they appear to have a lot of the same parts, but just sized different? Can't I just change the main jets and PV?

Since you asked, my idea would be to buy an 81 from my nephew's uncle...

Max, do you know if our English friends who are now building the 97, have any intentions of ever tooling the castings and other components necessary to build the Stromberg 81's? It seems there would be some potential business for them to consider and it would not be limited to those folks who own vehicles powered by the little 60 hp FH engines.

Please pm me on this if you would rather not make comment on the forum.

A v/8 60 is about 134 cubic inches. A Model "a" four banger is 200 plus cubic inches.
Nobody wanted 60 hp powered car in the old days because of no power..They are cute engine but I would not one in a model "A" or full sized car or pickup.

They are neat for midgets or small boats.

Update.

My little V8 60 is still stumbling. But after more tinkering I have more information. It's a stromberg 48, not. 97. I was told it was a 97. It has #48 main jets, and a #65 power valve. The motor has a stock rebuild, with stock intake. When it's cold pulling the choke helps the stumbling, but when it's hot the choke makes worse. Over all it gets worse when it gets hot. My adjustment screws in the base are a little more wiggly then I thank they should be Also the spark plugs are blacker then normal. After all that, any ideas?

Well, you fooled all of us,eh...almost all, except the expert who asked 'who rebuilt the carb':)
If you thot it was a 97, and used a rebuild kit to rebuild a 97, then found it to be a 48 then what else...i.e.- are the body parts correct, etc, etc:confused:
Uncle Max makes me laugh, but I'd follow his advice from here on out. Good luck!
BTW...reminds me of times that SHE makes peanutbutter/walnut cookies (yummy)...without the peanutbutter and/or walnuts:eek:!!

A stromberg 81 model has a cfm flow of like 145 cfm and a 97 is like 154 cfm, not a big differnece. Now a late 39-40 ford-holley model 92 which came on v8-60s is 152 cfm flow. Both 81 carbs are a 7/8 bore and a 97 is a 15/16 bore, not a big difference there either. Its not the carb model its the wrong rebuilt kit and quality of the install. The really question is if it was working before you rebuilt it, why did you mess with it. I think if the get the proper kit, and put the same jets, float setting, and idle screw settings of when you took it apart you will be very close. But if you didnt record were the setting were at before you took it apart, you have a lot of messing around ahead of you. You see the rebuild specs are the that carb on the original motor not on a 60 motor.

There are more diff. than the jets and power valve between an 81 and a 48 or a 97. The top section on a 48 is diff than a81 or a 97.Top on a 81+97 are same. the base of the 81 is diff than 48 or 97.The choke trip lever on the 81-97 have the same shape but not like the 48 one.The 48,97 and 81 all use the same kit with the exception of the accelerator pump. And nobody makes a base to manifold gasket the correct size. The 97 or 48 one must be used it works ok. BTW a 48 uses jets of .048 and a power valve of #63. Mucho much tooo big for a small motor. Your flooding the engine with gas my man.No wonder it wont run right. OMO ken ct. Stock 81 has .035 jets and a #71 PV. FYI.
