steomberg 97 Issues

Have a 37 pickup with V8 60. Running a 97 with fresh rebuild. It starts and idles fine. When I give it the gas, it has a studder. It gets better when I close the choke half way. You guys have any thoughts?

Wondering who did the rebuild? A 97 may be a little much for that 60 if it's stock. You could always pm or email Uncle Max for some good advice. Keep us posted on what you find.

I did the rebuild. There's not a lot to one of those. Every part inside has been replaces. Done by the book. I think I have a vacuum leak on the vacuum advance line.

60 HP used a 81 not a 97,much smaller. The jets and power valve would pass too much gas for a 60HP engine.Making it stumble = too rich. ken ct.

A vacuum leak could do that. Plug the line and retest. Make sure your base and top gaskets are properly seated and your mating surfaces true and your screws snug but not overtight.

If it runs better when choked, you have a lean condition that could be a vacuum leak, a clogged jet, or a low fuel bowl level. Did you change or remove and at least clean the emulsion tubes?

I did replace the emulsion. I do think my float is set to low. Adjusted the float with a float gauge. Just found out after a little reading that the top of the float should set level with the body with out the gasket. Do you know if there's any truth to that? Mine is sitting lower then that. Truck was running great up intell two weeks ago. This problem came on like a light switch. Running great one moment, like the crap the next.

Dont know where you got that float setting but its wrong. Set at the end of the float on the flat section ,NOT on the hump @1/4 to 3/16" dry no gasket with float needle in the closed position [use a steel needle not a rubber tipped one. ken ct.The carb is still too big. :)

Mike has it right. The description follows that something has happened to cause a lean condition. If it is a vacuum leak it must be a whopper and should be easy to find. If it was running good but suddenly changed I would vote for a chunk of crud entering and partially blocking a main jet.

The 97 should run great on the V8-60. They do very well with dual 81's.

accelerator pump??....if it doesn't give that blast of gas when you hit the throttle, it will stumble...i think....Mike

Keep us posted on what you find. How is that little 60 built? Bored, stroked, cam? What is your best guess at developed horsepower?

It's got a fresh rebuild on it. It's bored 30 over. Didn't wanna do a cam because they want an arm and a leg for adjustable lifters. It's a good strong motor for a 60. It sounds bigger then it really is. I'll keep you guys posted

Ken, how do you figure that 97 is to big? There are dozens upon dozens of guys out there running 2- 97's as well as 2- 94's on they're 4 bangers, and 2- 97's on V8-60's. It's all a matter of the proper setup and adjustments. This issue is most likely a vacuum leak or when you reseated the pump you curled the edge of theleather cup, (which is a common mistake) allowing the pump pressure to blow right past.

They have to be really built motors to accomadate 2 94 or 97 in my opinion.Sorry to disagree with you. ken ct.

I run a 97 on my 60hp, scoots the little TD right along. Some day I'd like to run two, but probably more for looks than more go, goes good enough for now. Marvin

Have you looked down the throut while running! Are you getting enough gas? Flashlight and a few flips on the accelarator will tell you if flow is good. She'll run rich but stubble on lack of gas too.

Just a thought

Dick,
Not saying whose right/wrong in their assumptions/practices/preferences in running carburation. However, for consideration, the v8 60 runs all of about 126/136 cu in:eek:! Whereas , say my four banger B runs over 200 cu in...before mods ! More cubic inch vs carb serviceing cubic inch ability has to do with why a banger will handle more carb, then say v8 60. Of course jetting /engine cond/mods and other considerations are to be considered.

.030" over what bore diameter? Are you talking .030" over the original sleeved diameter or the diameter after removing the sleeves? In other words....what is the actual cubic inch displacement of your engine now after it was rebuilt?

Update.

My little V8 60 is still stumbling. But after more tinkering I have more information. It's a stromberg 48, not. 97. I was told it was a 97. It has #48 main jets, and a #65 power valve. The motor has a stock rebuild, with stock intake. When it's cold pulling the choke helps the stumbling, but when it's hot the choke makes worse. Over all it gets worse when it gets hot. My adjustment screws in the base are a little more wiggly then I thank they should be Also the spark plugs are blacker then normal. After all that, any ideas?
