steering worm: pressing on shaft

now who knows how to remove the sector gear?????

Are you referring to the roller on the sector shaft? If so, I use a carbide bur in a straight shaft grinder and carefully grind the head off of one end of the pin. Then drive it out with a punch. Then replace roller, thrust washers and new pin. I then tack each end of the pin with a small TIG weld.

On a related note, the thrust washers provided with the repair kit are usually too thick, so they will need to be ground to the correct thickness. The best way is to have them ground is on a surface grinder. I have found that .075" or .076" thickness (or a combination of the two) seems to work well.

that's exactly what i'm referring too Neil!
i found a thread on the subject last night and first thing this morning did exactly what you and the thread described ... it worked like a charm!
and yes the new thrust washers were too thick...
i measured the old roller assembly, then the new assembly , the new washers were way to thick.. so i lapped the old ones down with some sandpaper, got them to the desired thickness(old assembly) and put the assembly back together with some moly grease... i have a MIG at my shop... is that not a good idea? if not i'll TIG it at a friends place-
thanks for your 2 cents Neil, it was greatly appreciated-

MIG will do the job OK...just tape everything up so you don't ruin something with weld splatter. I like the TIG because it's clean...

that's what i was thinking.. i'll have it TIGed-
how about the sector shaft bushings.... any suggestions on replacing them?

Rich-

The sector shaft bushings are pretty easy to press out and press new ones in...either in a big vise or a press. I use a socket to press them out, but machined a driver to press them in. The thin wall split bushings can be stubborn if you dont keep them square when pressing them in.

They will then need to be honed or reamed to size. I think honing on a Sunnen pin hone is the best way. Any automotive machine shop that does king pins or wrist pins should be able to do it. I found an old Sunnen hone, so I can do it myself now...

I took a piece of aluminum plate, put it on cement floor using it as an anvil drove the shaft through the gear by hitting gear first... Let me know if you don't understand this... Worked great for me, and I've got the press... Karl

I did the heat and press thing and had to finish it the way you did. I have a 12" X 8" X 1 1/2" piece of aluminum, it has some serious dents in it from ramming the shaft with the worm gear down. It worked great for me too. jim.t.

the old bushings came out with some minor elbow grease, a hammer and round nose chisel....the new bushings pushed right in 3/4 of the way... and had to be pressed down the final 1/4 way down....i'll hone it tomorrow, than put it all together...

thanks Neal for sharing your experience!
