Will another fine mess I got myself into Ollie!.:( The other day I was going to put my worm gear on the two tooth shaft. Pack the shaft in hot ice for about 3 hrs. Heated the worm gear until it glowing red. Grab the shaft and gear tried to slide it on the shaft about haft way on it would not budge any more. So what is a way to get this thing off so I can have someone else do it right? Old one I cut off with angle grinder. Richard/Ca

Sorry, but by heating the worm gear red hot you have annealed the metal and lost the heat treat. I suggest that you cut it off and buy a new worm gear. They should be presed on cold. Gar Williams

I used a piece of iron pipe that fit over the steering shaft as a sort of slide hammer to pound off my old worm gear. But first I heated the gear end of the shaft in a barbecue, and immediately before hammering, I poured cold water down the inside of the shaft to cool it and shrink it away from the worm.

To install the new worm, I temporarily welded a couple of bits of scrap iron to the shaft, so I could press the new worm on. See the photos on this page: http://www.dougbraun.com/model_a_gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=4307

Oh well goes to show you are never to old to learn!:( Doug I have looked at your site before I am going put it in a folder or some place so I can find it when I do my brakes. I will probably just cut my $35.00 mistake off. Thanks for the information.

Not to plug one great vendor over another great vendor (oh, but we be lucky!), but Mike's "A" FORD-ABLE charged just $25 to "replace" the worn steering worm with a new one I bought from Mike. Shipping was very reasonable. It is only reasonable that some of the work should be left to the folks who are equipped to do it. Don't worry. You will still be a "restorer!"

Believe or not Bruce the way I try to put the worm gear on the shaft was told to me by several "expert" Model A restorers plus others ways. Like I said never to late to learn.Maybe I will try Mike's way Thanks for the suggestion. Richard/Ca
